Grand Valley State University

Ready for our curtain call!

Grand Valley State University will be welcoming a new president next month with new curtains in the Kirkhoff Center's largest conference room. Flyhouse installed the two panels which measured 10’6” tall and 36’ wide each, for a total of about 70’ of (IFR) Inherently Flame Resistant fabric Charisma, which never need future maintenance with fire-proofing chemicals. As part of the project, Flyhouse repositioned the curtain track to a more convenient place for overall space usability.  After finding access and moving structure, we re-mounted the brackets that hold the track, modifying existing equipment to allow for a more harmonious space for GVSU's needs.

These curtains come at the end of a 3-year project that included a $20 million, two-story, 47,000-square-foot addition to the Performing Arts Center. Flyhouse installed rigging infrastructure, pipe grids and curtains in the new space, which includes a black box theater, lighting design laboratory, and a theatre and dance lab. The building also features multiple music department rehearsal spaces and a percussion room, with Flyhouse-installed acoustic drapes so musicians can hone their skills without too much interference from echoes off the walls.

GVSU's 220-member Laker Marching Band and various vocal ensembles also use the new center, which opened in fall 2017.

2019 Final Four Basketball Tournament with an assist by Flyhouse

Posted by Flyhouse on Apr 3, 2019 9:18:46 PM
In oder to manage light control requirements of NCAA Final Four, Chicago Flyhouse Inc. installed nearly seven miles of fabric at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn ahead of the championship games that begin this Saturday, April 6.

Flyhouse partnered with Rose Brand to fabricate inherently flame retardant synthetic velour, which Flyhouse hung around the perimeter of the 1.75 million square foot venue. The lightweight blackout liner and pewter-colored fabrics were selected to draw minimal attention to curtain systems used throughout the stadium.

One curtained section required a drape that measured over 63,000 square feet—enough to cover 14 basketball courts.

Flyhouse also designed and fabricated a proprietary and fully networked chain hoist control system, which reduces the overall cable and power requirements at the stadium. The semi-permanent motorized truss system gives U.S. Bank Stadium an easy-to-use lightweight control system for future events.

“We are honored to work with U.S. Bank Stadium and the NCAA Final Four on such an iconic national sports event,” says Flyhouse founder Mark Witteveen. “This is an example of what Flyhouse does best: taking unusual requests and impossible problems and turning them into extraordinary solutions.”

The entire project took approximately eight months and required custom design drawings, system mock-ups, and engineering review.

Flyhouse was also contracted by the Minnesota Sports Authority to add an additional 67,000 square feet of acoustic drapery to improve the stadium’s sound quality for upcoming events.
