Chicago Flyhouse was chartered to project manage and execute a ‘Jellies’ themed installation in the eight-level central atrium at Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue.

A tie-in with the popular ‘Jellies’ exhibit at Shedd Aquarium, the installation featured window stickers up to 3′ in diameter that were applied to the panels of the atrium’s glass-walled elevator bank, ten 12-foot long 60lb plexiglass model jellyfish, three strings of plexiglass “bubbles,” and five 12-foot long banners advertising the exhibit at the Shedd.

Coordinating with (Water Tower tenant) Macy’s staff to obtain access to the rigging area over the two-day installation period, Flyhouse teams first rappelled down the exterior elevator walls, configuring the window decals as detailed by the installation designer. On the second night, the jellyfish mobile was installed, which required careful planning, as the atrium contains only one pick-point from which the entire arrangement had to be suspended in perfect balance and without lateral rotation.

With only one week from bid award date to project completion, Flyhouse was able to complete all aspects of the job without sub-contracting any labor and finished each night’s work in 2/3 the allotted time.
