As part of its ongoing growth and rising profile, Chicago’s critically-acclaimed Lookingglass Theatre Company recently moved into a custom-designed theater space in Michigan Avenue’s historic Water Pumping Station.
A classic “black box” performance venue, the space was planned to accommodate the inventive staging Lookingglass is known for – with complete flexibility of space configuration supported by a pipe grid that runs above the entire room. Because of the forward-thinking design, areas of the grid were made inaccessible during instances when audience seating or scenery was placed beneath it, and Chicago Flyhouse was called in to provide a Fall Protection solution for safe grid access at all times.
Through a full on-site inspection and discussion with theater crew, Flyhouse determined how the grid is used and by whom, in order to design a solution specific to Lookingglass’s needs. Flyhouse’s team proposed a complete Fall Protection program utilizing a system of D-ring anchorage points along the catwalks that attached to retractable lifelines. To further ensure crew compliance, Flyhouse’s design utilized top of the line easy-to-wear harnesses and the lightest retractables on the market. Flyhouse’s Fall Protection design integrated seamlessly with Lookingglass’s existing grid system, enhancing its functionality, safety, and longevity.
Flyhouse is pleased to have been able to participate in the continued growth and success of one of the country’s most notable regional theaters, and a true Chicago landmark.
