Indiana University
The Jacobs School of Music: Opera & Ballet Theater puts on more than 1,100 performances each year, including 5 fully staged opera productions at the Musical Arts Center (MAC). The theater is in constant use throughout the school year with limited time available for renovations. At the same time, the MAC has aged to the point that much needed repairs and upgrades are required.
In mid-April, Flyhouse was awarded the initial phase of renovation work for the the MAC. This summer, Flyhouse will begin with replacing a staggering 432 loftblocks (double what you might see in an average theater). We will also replace two of the hoists, rigging, and control that operate the lighting bridges.
We’re always looking for extraordinary solutions, and here we've found a way to repurpose parts of unused arbors to repair some heavily used arbors that have been damaged over time and have hard to source parts.
In addition, we're installing two new motorized hoist assemblies for two of the venue's five lighting bridges—some of which have weight capacities of up to 5,000 lbs. New Flyhouse hoists, rigging, and control will bring the theater up to current industry standards.
Our ability to bring fabrication in-house and work strategically with Indiana University's administration on scheduling are helping to make this summer renovation a reality. That's how we fly.
