The Getz Theater Center at Columbia College Chicago was originally built in 1929 and most recently renovated in 2018. The Flyhouse crew was back in recent weeks at the Center’s Sheldon Patinkin Theatre. While the pipe grid we installed in this black box space isn't the largest in our portfolio, it brought unique set of challenges.
Our crew had less than three weeks between Memorial Day and Juneteenth to complete our work at this busy venue—the university stages 40 productions a year! Our first step was removing the old pipe grid in order for the concrete ceiling to be scanned. Next, we re-plotted all rigging points to be sure our new points would be installed clear of any obstructions or rebar. Once that work was completed, we installed the new pipe grid as well as a new curtain track along the perimeter of the space.
BY THE NUMBERS – Flyhouse Aerial Arts:
- 60 pipe grid hangers
- ~ 500’ of 1-1/2” Schedule 40 pipe
- 31 wall-mounted curtain track hangers
- 1300 square foot black box theater
- 48% of the ceiling covered with obstructions
Despite the quick timeline, the Flyhouse team finished the scope of work and left the space ready for programming well ahead of schedule. That’s how we fly!
