The Umbrella Sky Project was born in Portugal in 2012 and has since spread around the globe with the goal of “coloring life, bringing color to gray spaces and making people smile!" The latest of these public art installations—and the 6th in the U.S.—is in Elmhurst, Illinois (about 20 miles outside of Chicago).
Elmhurst City Centre selected three unique locations around Elmhurst for the project, working with our friends at Ravenswood Event Services. Flyhouse was asked to help provide all the necessary rigging support services for each location.
We helped confirm and procure trusses for the structures needed for the the North York Stage and Central Campus locations.
The third location, Schiller Court, required a bit more ingenuity. This particular installation required the rigging to span between two buildings rather than the independent truss structure used at the other locations.
Flyhouse stepped in to provide additional guidance during the design and layout phase, ensuring that each location's installation met all engineering parameters in accordance to local wind and other regulations.
Ultimately, we were able to fabricate custom brackets for the Schiller Court location to keep the whole project on schedule. We also provided all the rigging and hardware, as well as Flyhouse supervision to complete installations. That’s how we fly!
